We have 4 children, 4 children-in-law, 11 grandchildren, 4 grandchildren-in-law. We have the best of life! I love to do crafts especially needlework crafts. I usually have a quilt or two in the making. I am a retired nurse and enjoying every minute of retirement.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.comBlogger218125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-8363114980090812992015-01-12T10:24:00.002-05:002015-01-12T10:24:40.820-05:00A New Year

I keep seeing that people are still watching my blog and hopefully reading back over some of the posts published a while back. I just have not gotten back into blogging. That is one of my goals for 2015.
My computer, which was a Dell with Windows XP had problems. When I took it to our computer tech, he said XP was the problem and they could not help me. So he sold me a rebuilt Acer with Windows 7. He was able to put most everything back on it from the old computer. It is a thin little computer and works fine. I am just not used to it yet.
As many of you know we have our house for sale. We are downsizing once it sells. Can't buy a new house until this one sells. I have been watching some really good possibilities, but can't move on them just yet.
When we buy another house we will be officially retired! Oh yes, hubby will continue his writing, but he won't be having to do a job every day. I hope to get more quilting done after the new house is in order.
We had one grandson get married in September and another one is engaged and to be married in June. Hopefully we will be able to go to that wedding, but it will depend on how the house sale is going.
Real estate is not moving much around here. I keep watching other houses with for sale signs in the yard to see when and if they sell. So far the market has been slow. I read in the newspaper that Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac were lowering the amount of money you had to have on hand to get a loan to 3%. I don't know what it has been, but with income tax checks coming in in February and this lower rate, the market should open up. Hopefully it will.
I finished my Bargelo quilt, but I have not taken any pics of it yet. I am presently working on two quilts. A catheral windown quilt and a Trees quilt. Pics coming hopefully soon.
Have a good year in 2015!Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-17524797660118752962014-08-12T09:19:00.000-04:002014-08-12T09:19:42.681-04:00This and ThatThis has been a great summer. We had sufficient rain in the beginning of summer. My wildflower flower bed grew and really looked good. Then a dry spell set in and my Black Eyed Susans just look like they have died. I was going to cut them down, but when I tried to break a stem, it would not break, felt like it still had life in it, so I left them alone. Then we started getting some rain along. I have some tall yellow wildflowers in that bed and they started blooming again. I don't know what they are. Maybe golden seal, I really don't know. We are getting plenty of rain now and that flowerbed has really resurrected, except for the Black Eyed Susans. They still look dead.

Our house is on the market to sell. Had good response when it was first on the market, but there is no one coming to see it now. We can't buy another house until this one sells. Hence we cannot move until this house sells. This is a good area to live in. We have good neighbors all around us. We have enjoyed living here for the past 29 years. It's just that we have no family living near us anymore. As we get older we need to be nearer one or more of our children. So we wait. We have no deadline to move and we own this house, so we can stay here as long as needed. I'd just like to get it sold, another one bought and get moved.
Our first great grandchild has past her one year birthday. Our second great grandchild has past his 6 month birthday. They are both beautiful children. Our Army grandson is stationed in Alaska. I think he really likes Alaska, but it so far from Alabama. He has been home twice since he was stationed there. The flight schedules from there to Alabama are terrible. He has about 3 changes to get home each time. He is almost half way through his Army stint. Our youngest grandchild starts back to college is a few days. My, how time flies!

This is just a small update on us right now. Have a happy rest of the summer.
I am still quilting, well, I was. I am crocheting. I started a crocheted tablecloth some few years ago. I lack 2 more squares of it and sewing the last 8-10 squares on the tablecloth.
We are moving to Mississippi as soon as we can sell our house and buy one there. That put a stop to my quilting, as we had to stage the house. A quilting hoop was not the place to be. I had been quilting Derek Lockwood's bargello quilt. I was nearly finished with quilting it. But I put the quilt away and put the quilting hoop away. Hopefully if we have not moved by fall, I will get it out again and finish it.
I will be posting along as we have time. Just hoping the house sells and we get moved soon.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-55691874128759184192013-12-20T14:45:00.001-05:002013-12-20T14:45:49.135-05:00My Second Teddy Bear QuiltI finished quilting my second Teddy Bear Quilt last night. I have not gotten a pic of it yet, but I will soon.

My thumb is progressing. It still has a scab on it, and I have to watch how I am grabbing the needle, but I am learning. I guess it is taking it's time filling in the new tissue.

Last night I started quilting the Derek Lockwood quilt I pieced last year. It is huge. I have not measured it, but I think it must be 110 x 110. I am quilting it on my large hoop frame. It is too big to put in my old timey quilting frames. Therefore it is heavy and difficult to manage, but I will manage it. I am anxious to get enough of it quilted that I can see how it is going to look.

Stay tuned for more coming soon.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-14848641310196955562013-12-01T23:36:00.002-05:002013-12-01T23:36:26.386-05:00My injured thumbI did get to work on my future great grandchild's Teddy Bear quilt some tonight. I don't know why but I keep thinking this child is a boy. Call it grandmother's intuition. I thought my first great grandchild would be a girl from the beginning. My husband will tell you I have this uncanny intuition about people. I try not to make my feelings known to any except my very closest family. I can't explain it so I just try to keep it to myself. Except for the great grand babies. So Jared, you might be decorating that nursery a little for a boy.
My thumb is healing fairly well. I am going without a bandaid at home. Just putting one on when I got out in public. It doesn't look so good, so best to keep it covered. I thought this evening when I had a little over an hour, I try the quilting thing again. The last time I got maybe 2inches quilted when I realized I just could not do it. Tonight I got nearly a whole block quilted. I am having to change the way I quilt due to the thumb still being sore. I know now that I can quilt with some improvisions. I just lack 2 blocks and the binding having it finished. Hope to be able to finish it at least the next week.
Happy quilting to you all.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-5891449832953177162013-11-23T15:35:00.000-05:002013-11-23T15:35:21.322-05:00Have Not QuiltedI had a little accident. I should have been more careful. I was slicing carrots for soup on my Pampered Chef mandolin and cut off the side of my thumb. This was not the first time I have cut my fingers with that gadget. This one was the worst though. I could not get it to stop bleeding, so we ended up after about 8 hours going to the emergency room. We have one of our hospitals that advertises "5 Minute ER". So of course, that is where we went. Well, from the time your papers are filled out until you get to go to a room, it was probably about 5 minutes. Then the wait begins. Since I was not the worst patient to be seen that night, I got to wait, and wait and wait. For three hours. I know there were people around me who were much sicker than I was. I could hear them, gagging and moaning. So I was happy to wait in my little, hot, room to be seen by the PA. Just as long as those sick people stayed in their rooms and did not give me a stomach virus.
I came home with a big bandage on my thumb. There was no flesh to suture, so they used silver nitrate to stop my blood flow. Every had that? Don't! This is what they use to put on newborn's umbilical cords. That is powerful stuff. If I had not been a grown woman, a great grandmother at that, and a nurse who has seen it all, I would have screamed! It did stop my bleeding though and I am thankful for that.
So I have not been able to quilt or crochet since. Hopefully I can get back to that baby quilt soon. I have it about half way finished. When I can't quilt or crochet while I watch TV at night, I get very distracted. Hopefully soon I can quilt again. I have been able to crochet some since I got the big bulky dressing off and am down to just a couple of large bandaids.
Beware of those Pampered Chef mandolins!Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-11127088130008477422013-11-08T09:38:00.000-05:002013-11-08T09:38:47.241-05:00Apple SlawI got a recipe through my email for Apple Slaw. I had made a winter salad last year with lettuce, apples, and a dressing similar to Italian Dressing but with some sugar in it. This Apple Slaw recipe had it's own dressing in it also. So here goes:

Apple Slaw

10 oz shredded cabbage, I bought mine in the bag at the grocery store. It has some carrots shredded in it.
2 apples. The recipe said Granny Smith, but they are too tart for my taste. I used Gala
For dressing:
3/4 cup mayo
2 Tablespoons vinegar, I used white
1/3 cup sugar, I used Splenda
Dice apples pretty fine, add to cabbage. Mix dressing ingredients and whisk well. Add dressing to cabbage and apples and mix thoroughly.
I did not use the whole bag of cabbage, as that would be too much for us. I diced a whole apple but only used half of it. Then I put about 2 tablespoons, heaping, dressing on it and mixed it. It is a really good salad and will be on our table a lot this winter. I put the remainder of the dressing in a container with a lid. It would be good dressing for other salads.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-27914074477243739512013-10-11T16:22:00.003-04:002013-10-11T16:22:37.496-04:00Another Teddy Bear QuiltI finished another Teddy Bear quilt this week. It is just like the previous one I made. It is for another great-grandchild coming soon.
This is our great granddaughter when she was about 4 weeks old. She was a tiny little girl at that time. I used to work in the Nursery in a hospital and I should have been used to tiny babies but she just seemed so tiny to me. She is gaining weight though and is getting bigger all the time.

We have 9 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 3 grandchildren-in-law and one great grandchild. The great grandchild lives probably 10-11 hours away from us. We have never driven there from home, have always gone to our daughter's and then on to the granddaughter's. We saw the great granddaughter once when her parents brought her to visit her grandparents who live near us. But thanks to facebook, we are keeping up with her through the pictures that are posted on there. She is a dandy and I would love to be able to hold her and squeeze her. She is at the age that is so sweet right now. Hopefully I can get some pictures of her on here tomorrow.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-81281008136497424022013-09-16T08:52:00.000-04:002013-09-16T08:52:22.963-04:00More on the Ice Maker Dilemma
I do have a new ice maker now. A couple of weeks ago I had heard nothing from the repairman, so I decided on that Monday I'd call him just to touch base. I had several things hanging that needed to be taken care of or else deleted. The ice maker was one of them. I was still making ice in my old ice cube trays and dumping them in the icemaker bin. You know those ice cubes are not the same size and shape of the cubes that the ice maker makes. I love crushed ice in my iced tea or sodas. When I tried to crush the ice the frig groaned and carried on so, that I quit trying to crush the ice. The cubes were bigger and thicker than my ice maker made.

So among by "touch base" calls that Monday morning I called the frig repairman. He said he had been planning to call us that day, just to touch base with us. He told him he was still trying to be the ice maker replaced. He said he was going to call the company that day and see what the hold up was. On that Wednesday he called and said the ice maker was in and he would come out at 4:30 that afternoon. I was thrilled it was here, but not so thrilled that he could come that late on Wednesday. On Wednesday evenings we go to church for Bible study, so I have to have supper on time to get everything done and cleaned up in time to leave the house at 6:30 PM. But what can you do? I wanted that ice maker put in. I went ahead and made preparations for our supper. He came early which was a big help to us. It only took him a minute to put the new one in. And the water started running in before he had it completely attached to the freezer. We were happy to have it in. We had been concerned about what he would charge and the price of the ice maker. But if you want your appliances to work, you have to pay the price. When he told us the charges we were pleasantly surprized! It was less than $200 for all his running and his installation and the ice maker itself. I think we came out better still than taking out that extended warrantyQuilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-73148007544260684292013-09-11T15:48:00.000-04:002013-09-11T15:48:45.030-04:00This and That
I have been very negligent in keeping up with this blog. I have been piecing another baby quilt for another great grandchild due this winter. I have the Derek Lockwood quilt put together with the batting and backing ready for cooler weather to come. Our summer had been so cool until a few weeks ago that I had thought several times of getting my quilting hoop on a frame out and starting to quilt it. We did finally get summer and now I am glad I didn't get the hoop out as it would just be in the way.

The baby quilt I quilted for our first great grandchild has been delivered. I had made her an heirloom dress also, that was delivered to her. I have made several heirloom dresses but I think I have made my last one. Our fabric shop went out of business and I only have Walmart now to purchase fabric locally and Walmart just does not have a good selection. The fabric shop I went to in the next town did not have a good selection of laces, or did not have that many that I could afford. Then also I just had a difficult time getting this dress made.

This is a pic of the dress after I got it finished. It turned out pretty good. It is a size 18 months. I always made them bigger because newborns get so many clothes that are a small size that they can't possibly wear them all. This way with a bigger size they have something to look forward to for later. Well, their parents do.

This is a pic of our little bundle. She is surely sweet. She was a small baby as was her mother.
We have never taken out the extended warranty on any appliance we have ever bought. And we have come out ahead because of that. So daughter and son-in-law were here over a week ago. Before that two of our children and their spouses were here for a weekend the last of June. So after our daughter was here I thought I'd check the ice cube bin and see if the ice needed to be leveled so it would hold more. To my surprise it was almost empty! Put my finger in the ice cube freezer gizmo and it was dry as could be. Then I lifted the bar up and down a couple of times and it did not run water in. So we call our handy dandy jack of all trades friend. Turns out they knew as much about an ice maker as I did. Now our warranty had expired about May 5, 2013. Always happens! If something is going to tear up it is always after the warranty has expired. Our friend told us a refrigerator repairman to call. My husband called him and he said to take a "foam cup and fill the ice cube maker yourself." He told us to wait 3 hours and see if it froze ice. We did that and it did freeze ice. But 9 hours later it had not dumped the ice. So we called him back. His reply: "Call me in the morning." Just like the old adage of calling the doctor, "take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning."
The next morning my husband wanted to me call him. A woman can usually do better with a repairman than a man. So I called. He wanted us to take the ice maker out of the frig and bring it to him! I told him we could not see anyway to get it out. He said, "Well, there's just two little screws holding it. Just unscrew them and bring it to me." I told him we could not see any little screws. I got aggravated with him and hung up. I called Lowe's where we bought the frig and asked them to recommend a frig repairman. They gave we several numbers, some of the numbers were not local. So what do you do when you really need a repairman? No, I don't go on Angie's List. I went to the yellow pages. The first local number did not answer. After all it was 8 AM. But he did call back later and told me he was having trouble with his cell phone. At least he called back. Called the next local number. Told the man what I wanted. He said he'd be here at 10:30. Then he called before 9:30 and said he had finished sooner than expected and he was on his way. Great! He examined some things on the frig and told us he had an appointment to get new brake shoes on his truck and he would come back Monday morning. He wanted us to leave the wire down in the ice making position for 2 hours and call him. We did that and nothing had happened. We told him we had to be out of town Monday morning, so he said he would come back Tuesday.
When he came Tuesday morning he took the ice maker out and took it with him. He called back and said we needed a new ice maker and asked if the warranty was still effective. He told us anymore he took out the extended warranty on refrigerators and washers. He said he'd have the new ice maker by the next Tuesday (tomorrow).
In the meantime I had 3 ice cube trays that I keep just in case I need them. I got them out and I have frozen ice in them and dumped it in the ice bin. I am looking forward to tomorrow when hopefully, I will have a new ice maker. I'll probably be several hundred dollars poorer, but at least, I 'll have ice!Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-63952749288088651892013-07-23T08:42:00.004-04:002013-07-23T08:42:49.102-04:00The New PrinceSo the new prince was born yesterday in London. Seems that everyone in London is at the palace waiting for his first appearance. BUT his parents will come out the same door that Princess Diana came out at the hospital with Prince William so many years ago. People are betting about what his name will be. I find that really amusing. The parents are going to name him, no matter what the bookies say. And I'd bet they already have his names picked out. I think most new parents have names partially picked out way before the baby is even conceived. Now they don't always stick to those names, but they have a list of names they really like. Well all except my granddaughter, who could not pick out names for her dolls. Forgive me Ashley. She does have a nice name picked out for her baby who will be making her appearance any day now.

I worked for a period of time in the OB section of the hospital in the town where we lived years ago. Since I was a licensed nurse I worked mostly in the nursery. We had at the most 3 people working in the nursery: the head nurse, a nursing assistant and me. The nursing assistant cared mostly for the well babies. I got the sick babies. I loved my time in OB. The nursing assistant that worked mostly on the days I worked told me to watch the change of the moon. She said there were more babies born a couple of days before to a couple of days after a new moon or a full moon. I thought that was an old wives' tale, but I started noticing the number of babies we had on a given day. We had to wear scrub dresses, so we all had a locker right outside the OB wing of the hospital to change from street clothes to scrubs. We would go into the OB hallway from an outside hallway and come out right in front of the nursery. Of course, we all glanced as we hurried by to get "clean" before going on to do our duties. I starting noticing that there were more babies on the new moon and full moon changes that any other time. Why? I have no idea. But the moon controls the tides of the ocean, so why can't it control the tides of the human body.

Another thing I learned years later when I went from newborn nursing to nursing home nursing. The confused residents are more active just before a new moon or a full moon. I worked night shift for about 1 1/2 years. I had begun to notice the moon changes before I went to work to predict what kind of night we would have. On those nights just before, during and just after a new moon or full moon we were really busy keeping confused residents in bed. Then one month an older nursing assistant I had who was worth her weight in gold, told me we were headed for a blue moon. Okay again I think, "old wives' tale". Especially from her. She said she would see a wispy fog like thing outside the door of a resident who would pass away soon. She had all the new young nursing assistants scared to death to walk down a dark hall by themselves. One even asked me if there were ghosts. I told I did not believe in ghosts, but if I ever saw one I would be a believer.

So back to the blue moon. You have heard songs about blue moons. So again I did not believe her. But she told me a blue moon was when there were two new moons or two full moons in a given month. She said the residents would really be bad on that moon change. Sure enough that month when the blue moon came we were really busy! The residents were up or on their call lights all night long.

The moon is an interesting study. How it affects our psyche is quite interesting. Do a google or bing search for blue moon and start your study. I guess Princess Diana was really my favorite of the royal household. I was devastated when she died, but I did not mope around for days. I thought she was a beautiful lady and probably a mistreated lady. Now her grandchild will be born probably today.

Another baby watch is one that our family is awaiting. Our oldest grandchild (granddaughter) is waiting for her baby to be born. I remember how uncomfortable I was when I was pregnant in the summer time. And we did not live in southern Mississippi! Hopefully her little bundle of joy will arrive soon and she will be more comfortable.

So keep a watch on this site for the arrival of Maggie Rivers Smith!Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-45982888008688030632013-07-08T08:15:00.002-04:002013-07-08T08:15:46.318-04:00Bargelo Quilt

The bargelo quilt is finished piecing. It is a very heavy quilt without even putting batting in it. My plan is in the next few days to get the batting and backing on it and it will be ready to quilt once colder weather comes.

I am putting the fabric around the edges of the Petals of my Heart quilt. It is a pretty quilt, but it was very small. I had bought the fabric they recommended for the backing knowing that the quilt was going to be small and would need to be made bigger. Don't know how I will quilt it. I don't do stipple quilting. My sewing machine is in the corner of the room and I don't have room to have a lot of fabric on the side. Also I think with the quilt, batting and backing it would be too heavy for my arms to have to move it through the machine. I'll decide something of later. If anyone knows where I can get a white washable ink marking pen, please leave me a note in the comments. The fabric of this quilt too dark to see the blue ink washable pens.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-87196205009270908422013-07-07T16:08:00.000-04:002013-07-07T16:08:13.074-04:00Heirloom Baby Dress

Several years after my youngest grandchild was born I started making heirloom dresses and romper suits for special grandnieces and grandnephews. I don't remember now how many I made or for whom, but I've made several. The romper suits are much easier to make. With our first great granddaughter to be born later this month or early next month I decided to make her one. When I was ready to get the fabric and laces, I noticed that our fabric shop had gone out of business. I was greatly disappointed by this. We have a Walmart also and they have brought back some of their fabrics, but nothing like what you would want to make an heirloom dress from. The only lace they have is what you face hems with. So I had to run down the location of the Bernina store in the next town. That store had been sold and moved to a new location. Incidentally they do not have near the merchandise the old Bernina store had. They did have batiste and I got enough for the dress. I was not impressed with their selection of laces and I was not impressed by the price of them. They had no ruffled lace that I could afford to buy. They had no entradeau. I got some lace but I was not happy with it. So I went to my stash of laces, which is what I should have done to start with. I did not find enough ruffled lace, but I did find enough entradeau for the cuffs of the sleeves. I had hoped that I had some white or pastel narrow ribbon for the sleeves but I didn't. I have not seen any narrow ribbon in Walmart either. So I put a cuff on the sleeve and the entradeau on top of the the cuff.

This dress was difficult for me to make. Maybe because I am older, but I had rip some of it out and try again. I think our granddaughter will be happy with it. I think it is unusual that our first grandchild is having our first great grandchild, especially because our grandchildren are so close together in age.
Glaze

Combine 1 cup sugar (again I used half sugar and half splenda), 1/2 cup water and all 5 flavorings plus 1 teaspoon of almond flavoring. Bring to a boil and stir until sugar is melted and it comes to a boil. Pour over hot cake in pan with spoon and let set until cool and glaze on top is dry. Save enough glaze for bottom and sides of cake. Turn cake upside down. While cooling outside of pan, I put more glaze on the bottom and sides of cake.

It will really be pretty when it is finished with the strips around for the border. I got the pattern and fabrics from Keepsake Quilting. Derek Lockwood designed the quilt. I like his quilts and have quilted several of them. I usually change the background fabric. He uses a lot of blacks. I have cataracts and cannot see black very well when I am quilting/sewing. So I change a lot of his black background to white. I did not change anything on this quilt thought. It will have a dark green border and then a black border on the outside. The strips are sewed together in the order he gave. Then they are cut at different sizes and the strips sewed together. I have sewed it together using one fourth of the quilt. I then sewed the two one-fourths together. I have the last fourth of it nearly finished. Just lack about 4 strips. Then I will sew the third fourth to the fourth fourth and then the two halves together. The quilt is too heavy to sew each strip to the whole each time I get one strip made.
This is the Teddy Bear baby quilt that I just finished. I ordered the kit from Keepsake Quilting. They sent all the fabrics for this quilt. In the kit were the teddy bears already cut out. They sent 80 bears but I only needed 24, so I have more bears to make quilts in the future. I think it is a really nice baby quilt. And look what it did to my blog!! Sixty-nine hits yesterday and fifty-nine so far today. Makes me really humble. Now I'll have to put another post on soon. Am nearly finished with a baby quilt. Have a bargello quilt nearly pieced. It was be a dilly to quilt. Anyone have any experience with hand quilting one like that? The directions say to stitch in the ditch on every seam. Some of those strips are only 3/4 inch wide. I'll come up with something. I know I'll have to get out the full quilt quilting frames for it. No quilting hoop will work. Thank you all for reading my humble blog!Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-43602634996991267332013-03-05T08:30:00.000-05:002013-03-05T08:30:10.527-05:00Civil War Quilt

This is the Civl War quilt that I pieced and quilted. I had joined a block of the month club from Keepsake Quilting. They sent me a block each month. Of course each month you pieced all the blocks of that design. The border is small blocks. I don't remember how many of those there were, but a lot. I got a really heavy batting. Actually it was too heavy, but I used it anyway. Just made the quilt heavier and more difficult to manipulate on the hoop quilting frame I use. This quilt has a lot of brown/beige shades of color in it. So I was happy when a square had some green, blue, purple in it. I don't think I will ever attempt a block of the month quilt again. This one came as it should have and had all the fabrics and instructions needed. But another block of the month quilt I did after this one, was purely disgusting, but that is another story.
Love this quilt. The congregation was having their 100th anniversary. We really wanted to go and told them we would come. But they were not definite on the date, just some time in October. We told them we were already obligated for a week in West Virginia in October. So when they called back with a definite date, it was 3 days after we would have been in West Virginia for a week already. We did not want to have to stay 3-4 days in a hotel, nor did we want to bum around on relatives as we had done that on the way to West Virginia. We hinted around and thought they would take the hint and invite us to come on and stay with some of the members, but they didn't. So we had to drop out of the festivities. We would really have liked to have gone. We asked them to send us a brochure of their anniversary day. So a few weeks after their big day, our doorbell rang. When we went to the door, it was a mail delivery truck. He had the biggest box I about ever saw in his arms. When my husband took the box, his arms went up, you know, like it was not heavy at all. It was very light when I picked it up. We could not imagine what on earth it was. On opening it, it was a quilt!
It is a simple pattern. It was tacked and not quilted. I felt that the tacking was not going to hold that well, so I am quilting it. I am almost finished. On the back of it is this inscription:

I am really proud of this quilt. It is not every day that a quilter is given a quilt!
I have been negligent in keeping up my blog. Hopefully I can get back to blogging regularly now.

Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-50413996941907307622013-01-03T09:37:00.000-05:002013-01-03T09:37:03.637-05:00The New YearTo me New Years Day is a day for reflection. I like to reflect on what I had planned to do this past year. I don't make a lot of plans or resolutions. Resolutions are usually just broken after a few weeks. I did have some plans that I carried out through the year.

Number 1: I planned to read my Bible through on a Bible reading schedule. My son in Scotland has a three year Bible reading plan that he puts in their church bulletin every month. I decided that this would be my plan for the next three years. I am happy to say I have kept up with my Bible reading through this plan. I ended the year still on schedule. I like this plan because you only read 5 days a week. You read Old Testament and New Testament every day. He has it scheduled so you read about 55 verses total from both Testaments each day of those 5 days. And there is 2 free weeks worked in for those who get behind to catch up. I did not have to use the catch up weeks this year. I stayed on schedule. This was a first for me. While I read and study my Bible about everyday especially when I am teaching a class, I would fall behind on my scheduled reading. I am already into the second year of this reading plan.

Number 2: We planned to go to Scotland to visit our family there. We did that the last of August and first half of September. We did several days of sightseeing with our family. The highlight of the trip for me was being able to attend the annual ladies' day on the East Kilbride Church of Christ. I had wanted to do this for a long time, but it just never worked out until this year. Really enjoyed it. Got to see some old friends that I would not have seen otherwise. The lady who spoke is an acquaintance for many years. She did just a good job presenting a lesson to the ladies. Met some people from America who are working in Scotland now. This is always a plus. You get to compare people you each know and usually can pinpoint someone who both know.

Number 3: We planned to get our front porch and walk redone. That happened at the end of the summer. Our porch steps were sinking into the ground and one step was really high. The porch was pulling away from the house. So the contractor bricked around the porch, poured a new concrete pad, make brick steps up the the porch. He also poured concrete steps down to the driveway. He put cedar banisters around the porch and down the steps to the driveway. We got a painter to come and stain the banisters and they really pop now. We also had to get a new roof. With our house being added on to even before us, the roof went into so many angles and valleys that a shingle roof was difficult to repair. We had had several leaks over the years and they had been patched until there was no patching to be done. So we decided to get the Amish people to put us a metal roof on. They did that just before we went to Scotland. We have been well satisfied with the roof and with their work. It is so nice to hear the rain falling on the roof now.

Plans for this year: I will continue reading my scheduled Bible reading plan.

I want to get a better schedule for the chores I have to do daily, weekly, monthly. I have fallen behind on that.

I want to get some sorting out, cleaning out of closets, drawers, etc. I did some of this last year, but not to the extend I wanted to. Most of our things we have kept, just put back, or whatever, I started sorted through. But after a while it got mundane and I lost interest and stopped. This year I need to do better there.

I plan to teach the ladies' class at church again starting in March. The elders have not asked me yet, but that was the plan last August when another teacher took over the class. We'll see. By the time March gets here I may not want to teach again.

I plan to finish the quilt I am quilting. I plan to finish piecing the detailed quilt I am working on now. Pictures will be forthcoming of both of these projects.

Hopefully this year we will not have any major repairs to do to the house.

My plan last year was to read 50 books during the year. I surpassed that and read 53. I plan to continue reading books. Maybe I can read 60 in 2013.

These are my plans for 2013. Not much really, but still I plan to do a little each day.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7237671327257190377.post-39653531704912162322012-12-27T15:59:00.002-05:002012-12-27T15:59:36.953-05:00Happy New Year, 2013I must admit I have failed to keep up with my blog the last part of this year. Hopefully I can do better in 2013.

We had a good year. We were able to make another trip to Scotland to visit family and friends. Really enjoyed that. Hubby had a problem with his back while we were there and had to relent to using a cane when we were out walking and site seeing. He is used to getting up and walking around often here at home. On an eight hour plane flight you are not able to do that so often. He did pay several trips to the bathroom just to be able to move around. If you go back on this blog you can read more about our trip.

One big change in our family's lives is that our next to youngest grandson joined the army. Guess he had been toying with that idea for a while. So he finally made the plunge. We hated to see him go in the Army, but we are so proud of him for wanting to serve his country. He did his Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC and graduated the first of December. He was then sent to Fort Gordon, GA for his advanced training in radio operator/maintainer. He was allowed to go home for two weeks for the holidays. We went down and had Christmas with them. He is currently visiting his girlfriend in Maryland.

I was really amazed at the comaradary of the families of the recruits. There were at least three pages on FB for family and friends of the recruits at Basic Training. You got to feel like you knew the families. We did not get to go to the graduation, but our daughter was anxious to meet some of the families face to face.

Our work here with the TV program and Bible Correspondence Courses continues. We had to change TV stations due to their programming change this year. But we came out the best for that. We continue to be thankful for the C Street Church of Christ in Elizabethton, TN for the use of their studio for recording the programs. We are continually thankful to Jim Southerland who works as our production manager in recording the programs. donating his time.

Hopefully this year we can continue our work here. I hope to continue quilting and cooking, while I love. I will be getting some pictures on the blog soon of the Civil War quilt that I am quilting.

Hope your New Year is prosperous and happy.Quilting Granniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758444734529706469noreply@blogger.com0
